LA jamtronica ensemble Particle will be hitting RVA coutesy of EQ Produktions, taking the stage at The Canal Club on Friday, May 23 with a new lineup and some new tunes with which to blow your mind. This progressive instrumental ensemble, who combines a funky rhythm section with wild space-age keyboard sounds and talented guitar soloing, has been around for nearly 15 years now. However, recent lineup shakeups have left original keyboardist Steve Molitz (also a sometime member of Phil Lesh & Friends) the only one left standing from their early lineups. With bassist Eric Gould and drummer Darren Pujalet retiring from touring life to start families, Molitz will be heading up a new, revitalized quartet that comes to RVA bearing some great new tunes. The band has been working on a new album, their first in a decade, and should be previewing those sounds for an appreciative RVA audience on Friday.
The evening will feature a nice spread of local openers as well. Mekong Xpress & The Get Fresh Horns, a wild ensemble of talented RVA players from all sorts of other bands including Former Champions, Modern Groove Syndicate, Bio Ritmo, The Big Payback, the DJ Williams Projekt, and more, will be the direct openers. Birthed in a succession of weekly jam sessions in the back room at Mekong, the group takes its name from the RVA’s Beer Madness champion and Best Beer Bar In America according to CraftBeer.com. So you know the band’s history has been influenced by the best beer (and Vietnamese food) the city has to offer, and their music will be just as tasty and delicious as that legacy promises. Also on the bill will be opening DJs Phil Dice and Agent, kicking things off with some great dance music to get your feet moving. It’s all happening this Friday night at the Canal Club, starting off at 8 PM, so be sure to grab your tickets now!
