Bass/drum noise-rock duo New Turks are having a wild weekend, and they’re cramming it all into one day. These rhythm-crazed RVA madmen will play three shows in the space of 12 hours tomorrow, and will drive to Harrisonburg somewhere in the middle of all that. As we learned from our recent profile of this local duo, these guys are having a ton of fun playing loud and “beating the shit out of” their respective instruments, so I suppose it makes sense that they’d agree to this marathon of performances. Still, I can imagine they’ll be pretty tired once it’s all over.

Songs like their brand new jam “Blurred” are an obvious reason why. Released online a couple of weeks ago, “Blurred” is a preview of the cassette the band will release on Hand To Mouth Records next month. Beginning with a midtempo riff driven by plentiful tom fills from drummer Louis Heninger, the song soon locks into a solid groove driven by bassist Ethan Genurowsky’s bellowing vocals. The result is Killdozer-ish at first, though the double-time change-up towards the end is reminiscent of Pacific Northwest sludge masters Karp. Reaching nearly the three-minute mark, “Blurred” is a rather long track for the usually-concise New Turks, but it still leaves you wanting more.

As I’ve said, though, you’ll get more New Turks than you can possibly handle tomorrow. Start out by tuning in to 97.3 FM WRIR at 11 AM tomorrow to hear New Turks perform live on Dustin Richardson’s A Party Of One radio show. Then stop by Steady Sounds, located at 322 W. Broad St, to catch a live in-store performance by New Turks starting at 3 PM. After that show is over, the duo will drive to Harrisonburg to play in one of the houses there that does shows. I can’t give you any more info than that, but if you’re tapped into the Harrisonburg house show scene, I imagine you can find out pretty easily.

New Turks will be accompanied on all of these shows by NYC trio Beasty, a mathy post-hardcore crew with some Shellac-ish inclinations who should fit right in with the heavy, rumbling groove New Turks are laying down. So check them out as well! And keep an eye on New Turks’ Facebook page to find out exactly what’s going on with that new EP.
