But now, people out of Richmond are starting to notice the sea of talented musicians and bands that call this place home.
Paste Magazine published an article yesterday highlighting five places in Richmond that music lovers should check out.
Our record stores were mentioned first. Carytown’s Plan 9 Records, Deep Groove Records, Steady Sounds, and Vinyl Conflict all received shoutouts.
The National, The Camel, The Broadberry and Strange Matter all were mentioned second as places to check out live music.
Strangeways Brewing was mentioned on the list as a place to check out for music not only to listen to, but for their beers as well. They have a few brews named after songs of famous bands and muscians such as the Blitzkrieg Bock (the Ramones) and the Only Brewed For 4 Cuban Linx (Raekwon).
GWARbar, the restaurant and bar from the gatekeepers of hell known for their crazy antics, ghoulish costumes and heavy metal, aka GWAR made the list as well for its food and drinks.
And finally, as you might have guessed, the Richmond Folk Festival rounded out the top five. If you lived in Richmond for any amount of time, you have heard about this festival that draws thousands and brings everything from blue grass to hip hop to Cajun, to rockabilly and many other types of music to our city every year.
